Hello Everyone!
Today we will be discussing the importance of adaptability. Here at The Balance Act our tagline reads “Plan, Adapt and Succeed” and we understand that when you create your schedule some things are probably going to come up later in the week that you weren’t expecting. Which is why we made our schedules easily adaptable. One of the main keys to productivity is flexibility. So, whether it’s an invite from a friend, a moved due date, or even a sick day. It is important to prepare for events like these just in case they happen.
Time with Friends
We’ve all been there! Your schedule is planned out and then your friend calls and asks you to go out to dinner. This can be very stressful, but one of the most important things to remember is that it is okay to say “no”. Sometimes you just have too much to do and you can’t go out and that’s okay.
On the other hand if you really do want to go you’re going to have to move some things around in your schedule. This is a prime example of why we mentioned to leave a few blank boxes empty each week. This gives you increased flexibility with your schedule. You should have also have open times for meals on your schedule. These are perfect times to meet with that person and grab a meal (don’t forget to eat).
Sick Days
We all have them. The days when you are just too sick to do anything. It can be tempting on these days to use them as time to do work, but honestly that doesn’t give you the rest that you need. Sometimes it is better in the long run if you take the day and just rest. This article does a great job at explaining the benefits of taking the day off. While it may be tempting to work remotely while you’re sick it can hinder your performance in the long run.
If you do decide to take a full sick day to recover from an illness you will be behind. The next day you can make a list of all the things that you were supposed to do while you were sick and prioritize the items that are due within the week. Anything else can be moved to the next week. While this can be inconvenient at the time, you will thank yourself in the long run.
Double Booked
It has happened to all of us. We’ve all scheduled ourselves for two events at once. Many times, this is a simple fix of rescheduling, but other times you must do a little more work to correct the error. If you need to miss an event that doesn’t have a secondary time that you can attend, try to contact the person in charge of the event. Hopefully they’ll be able to send you the information that you missed, or you can try and schedule a meeting with them to go over the content.
There are many other situations when you might be forced to change your schedule, but that’s okay. It isn’t set in stone. So, just remember that it is important to remain flexible and willing to change things up. Utilize those open boxes to move things around and use your schedule to the best of your advantage.
See you next week!
Maria
